Britian's largest farming County - Lincolnshire

The new Hungry Stockman points the way!

It is now ten years since a group of Lincolnshire farmers decided to create their own meat co-operative, in the wake of the BSE crisis back in the 1990’s. As it celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2007 ‘Lincolnshire Quality Beef, Lamb and Pork Ltd’ is demonstrating more then ever just why it is better to buy locally produced meat.

The fundamental purpose of the scheme is to promote Lincolnshire born, reared and finished beef, lamb and pork. Following all the various food scares, consumers are increasingly concerned not only as to the origin of the meat they are eating, but also the quality. With ‘Lincolnshire Quality Beef, Lamb and Pork Ltd’, each cut of meat can be traced back to one of the scheme’s producer members. All of the animals only travel a short distance from farms in the county to A Wright & Son's abattoir in Boston, therefore avoiding a long and stressful journey half way round the country.

‘Lincolnshire Quality BL&P’ now has 90 farmer members, supplying in total approximately 2,000 head of cattle and around 8,000 each of lambs and pigs. Once the meat leaves the abattoir it is sent to the schemes six independent county butcher members, and seventy outlets of the Lincolnshire Co-operative Society.

Certificates of traceability accompany the meat, which together with promotional material carrying the Hungry Stockman logo, are then proudly displayed by the member butchers. Encouragingly many restaurants across the county are also displaying the Hungry Stockman logo, thereby informing their diners of the origin of the meat they are enjoying. Customers are happy in the knowledge they are supporting Lincolnshire farmers and reducing food miles, and consistently comment on the good taste and quality of the meat.
